Wetlands are of great importance for the conservation of biological diversity, regulation of the water cycle, sustainable use of water resources, and maintenance of essential ecosystem services. Kastamonu Province has significant wetland potential due to its rich stream network, extensive forest cover, diverse topographic characteristics, and numerous ponds and river systems. However, these areas may be subject to various environmental changes resulting not only from natural processes but also from agricultural activities, land-use changes, forestry practices, and anthropogenic pressures. This study aims to evaluate the general characteristics of wetlands in Kastamonu Province and the environmental changes they face based on previous research. In this context, studies focusing on water quality, heavy metals, ecological status, and the utilization potential of wetlands were evaluated using an integrated approach. In particular, the current environmental conditions, pollution pressures, and utilization characteristics of wetlands were assessed based on long-term and multi-parameter studies conducted in different aquatic systems. The study also emphasizes the necessity of evaluating wetlands not only in terms of water quality but also within the integrity of the broader ecosystem. The evaluations obtained are expected to contribute to determining the current status of wetlands in Kastamonu and to the development of sustainable monitoring and management practices.
