Özet (Türkçe)
The introduction of invasive species into ecosystems outside their native ranges can exert potential pressures on native communities, particularly when invasive and native species share the same habitats. Freshwater turtles are a particularly noteworthy group in this context. This study aimed to determine the distribution of the invasive red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta, in the wetlands of Çanakkale Province, Türkiye, and to assess its co-occurrence with the freshwater turtle species distributed in Çanakkale. Records obtained from previous field studies conducted in Çanakkale, together with recent field observations, were evaluated. In previous studies, T. scripta was recorded from Sarıçay Stream (16 individuals), the Kepez branch of Sarıçay (3 individuals), Biga Kocabaş Stream (1 individual), and Kavak Delta (1 individual), yielding a total of 21 individuals. During recent field surveys, 15 T. scripta individuals were recorded at Lake Nilüfer. Thus, a total of 36 T. scriptaindividuals were documented across the localities considered in Çanakkale. At all localities where T. scripta was detected, the native freshwater turtle species occurring in Çanakkale, Mauremys rivulata and Emys orbicularis, were also present. These findings indicate that the known distribution of T. scripta in Çanakkale has expanded to include a new locality and that the invasive species shares wetland habitats with native turtle species. Such co-occurrence is important for assessing potential habitat and resource sharing among these species. Monitoring the distribution of T. scripta populations and their co-occurrence with native freshwater turtles in Çanakkale is important for evaluating the potential spread of this invasive species and its possible impacts on native communities.
