Özet (Türkçe)
Birds are considered important bioindicators of ecosystem health because of their ecological functions and their ability to respond rapidly to environmental changes occurring within the ecosystems they inhabit. Wetlands are sensitive ecosystems for migratory birds, providing critical stopover habitats due to their high biological and habitat diversity. Increasing anthropogenic pressures and climate change are cumulatively accelerating the degradation of wetland hydrological regimes, the loss of ecological functions, and ultimately, wetland disappearance. Migratory birds depend on networks of strategically located sites throughout their annual migration cycles, with wetlands representing some of the most species-rich components of these networks. The loss of wetlands limits the access of wetland-dependent bird species to food resources, breeding grounds, and essential stopover sites required during migration. Çanakkale is one of the most important bottlenecks for bird migration in the Western Palearctic region. In this study, coastal wetlands in Çanakkale Province were comparatively evaluated in terms of the movements of migratory bird species during migration periods. The dataset consisted of scientific studies conducted in the region and validated observational records. Using the compiled inventory, diversity indices of migratory bird populations were calculated, and comparative analyses were conducted to examine the relationships between habitat diversity, wetland size, and migratory bird diversity. According to the A4iv criterion, sites through which more than 1% of the global population of a species passes are considered migration bottlenecks. In terms of soaring migratory birds, the Çanakkale Strait functions as a bottleneck for Pelecanus crispus, Clanga pomarina, and Ciconia nigra. For waterbirds, the location of wetlands around the Çanakkale Strait along an important migration route contributes to increased species diversity and richness during migration periods. More pronounced differences in diversity indices were observed in deltas dominated by shallow surface waters, likely due to seasonal fluctuations in water levels. A strong positive correlation was found between wetland size, habitat diversity, and migratory bird species diversity index. Wetland loss around the Çanakkale Strait, a critical migration corridor, may result in substantial declines in both migratory bird populations dependent on this corridor and the important ecological functions associated with these ecosystems. Furthermore, the need for further research evaluating how the cumulative effects of climate change and anthropogenic pressures on wetland dynamics, together with the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, may affect migratory bird species has become increasingly evident.
