Ekolojik ve Toksik Risk İndeksleri, doğal arka plan koşullarından Antroposen’i temsil eden güncel yüzey katmanlarına doğru ekolojik kirlilik baskısının artış eğiliminde olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Belirli seviyelerdeki Cıva sıçramaları yerel ekotoksikolojik risk artışlarına işaret etmekle birlikte, genel dikey profil akut toksisitenin altındadır. Sonuçlar, karotun estuarin sistemdeki doğal ekolojik dengeden Antroposen rejimine geçişin kesintisiz ve hassas bir sedimanter arşivini sunduğunu göstermektedir. Abstract (English)
By investigating primary production proxies and metal accumulation processes in a sediment core retrieved from the estuarine influence zone of the Güzelhisar River in Aliağa Bay, the transition dynamics of the system from its natural state to the Anthropocene were evaluated through a vertical depth profile. The study analyzed biogeochemical parameters—such as grain size, water content, TOC, N, P, CDP, and BSi—along with elemental concentrations of Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Hg, and calculated ecological and ecotoxicological pollution/risk indices. The sediment sequence reflects a gradual environmental evolution shaped by the interaction of terrestrial and marine processes specific to the estuarine environment. While the lower layers of the core exhibit the natural hydrological and sedimentary regime represented by high C/N ratios and terrestrial organic carbon inputs, the upper levels—characterized by increasing CDP, BSi, and nutrient loads alongside decreasing C/N ratios—indicate the transition phase to the Anthropocene, where marine primary productivity and eutrophication dominate the water column. Geochemical data clearly distinguish between natural enrichment originating from the basin's volcanic structure and accumulation processes triggered by human activities. While arsenic and local trace metals maintain high natural background values throughout the profile, the Enrichment Factors (EF) and Geoaccumulation Indices ($I_{geo}$) of elements such as Pb, Zn, and Cu show a gradual and pronounced upward trend from the lower layers to the surface, clarifying the Anthropocene impact. Ecological and Toxic Risk Indices reveal an increasing trend in ecological pollution pressure from natural background conditions toward the contemporary surface layers representing the Anthropocene. Although mercury spikes at specific levels point to localized increases in ecotoxicological risk, the overall vertical profile remains below acute toxicity thresholds. The results demonstrate that the core provides an uninterrupted and sensitive sedimentary archive of the transition from the natural ecological equilibrium to the Anthropocene regime in the estuarine system.
