Sosyal bilimlerde nitel araştırma yöntemleri bağlamında tasarlanan çalışmanın örneklemi Metin Erksan’ın Susuz Yaz (1963), Erden Kıral’ın Kanal (1978) ve Emin Alper’in Kurak Günler (2022) adlı filmlerinden oluşmaktadır.

Abstract (English)
From Dry Summer (Susuz Yaz) to Burning Days (Kurak Günler): Anthropocene and Water Literacy in Turkish Cinema
The concept of the Anthropocene refers to the profound impact of various human activities on ecological systems. The Anthropocene highlights the importance of cultural and artistic representations -alongside scientific and political tools- in addressing environmental crises. In Turkish cinema, water is not merely an element of aesthetic representation. In the Anthropocene era, cinema serves as a narrative medium that renders environmental crises visible, addresses ecological issues, and contributes to the development of water literacy by raising awareness about water resources. In this context, cinema plays a significant role in raising public awareness regarding the use, consumption, sharing, management, and depletion of water resources. This study focuses on representations of water in Turkish cinema within the framework of Anthropocene theory and the concept of water literacy. The study’s sample consists of the films Susuz Yaz (Dry Summer, 1963) by Metin Erksan, Kanal (The Canal, 1978) by Erden Kıral, and Kurak Günler (Burning Days, 2022) by Emin Alper.
Utilizing ecocritical film analysis and qualitative content analysis, this study evaluates how water is represented and how the relationship between water and humans is constructed, specifically regarding the potential to foster audience awareness of water literacy. While the film Susuz Yaz (Dry Summer) centers on the struggle for water rights and access, Kanal (The Canal) highlights water management and the ecological consequences of interventions in water systems; meanwhile, Kurak Günler (Burning Days) focuses on the water crisis, drought, and environmental collapse. Examining these three films together allows the relationship between Turkey and water -spanning approximately six decades- to be viewed in concrete terms: the concern shifts from possessing water in the 1960s to managing it in the 1970s, and finally to the fear of losing it in the 2020s.
This study demonstrates that water in Turkish cinema serves not merely as an element of aesthetic representation but also as a medium capable of influencing audience attitudes and awareness regarding water by bringing various water-related issues of the Anthropocene era to the screen. In this regard, the study aims to contribute to the literature through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the concepts of the Anthropocene and water literacy with film studies.
